India’s largest student organization, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), has described the death of Nepali student Prisha Shah at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha as extremely painful, disgusting, and shameful. In a statement released late Thursday, ABVP expressed serious concern over the recurrence of such incidents.
Prisha Shah, a resident of Birgunj, was in her second semester of the first year at KIIT. She was found hanging in her college hostel around 8 PM on Thursday. Prior to this, on February 16 (Falgun 4), another Nepali student, Prakriti Lamsal, was also found dead in the hostel of the same college.
ABVP’s National General Secretary, Virendra Singh Solanki, stated that the repeated silence of the state government on such sensitive issues is deeply unfortunate. He has demanded immediate strict action against KIIT.
The organization has accused the college administration of ignoring serious complaints. Prakriti Lamsal had lodged two complaints with the college administration about mental harassment and blackmail before her death, but the administration failed to address them seriously, which ultimately led her to take her own life.
ABVP is a student organization affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which is close to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The organization has demanded a fair investigation, strict action, and ensured safety of Nepali students.
